IDEA Conference
Wednesday, July 7, 2021 - 11:15

Recently, Dr. Eilish Dillon from the Department of International Development participated in the excellent online conference organised by the Irish Development Education Association (IDEA). Entitled 'Global Citizenship and Inequality 2021: Forging a New Path?', the conference addressed the urgent issue of global inequality and the solidarity needed to ensure human rights for all. On a range of equality issues and challenges, the conference enabled deep reflection and discussion through a rich mix of perspectives and experiences from speakers and contributors from around the world and within different sectors in Ireland.

Eilish moderated a panel at the conference which addressed the role of global citizenship education in forging a future based on equality and human rights. Inspired by the fact that COVID has shown us how essential global solidarity is, the question of how we can support global citizenship and activism was addressed.

In response to these questions, some really challenging points were raised by the panel contributors. These were: Amitabh Behar, CEO of Oxfam India, and Vice-Chair of the Board of CIVICUS; Eric Ehigie, Political Coordinator at Black and Irish, and host of the Engaging with Eric podcast; Dr. Caroline Munyi, Gender, Peace and Development Specialist and Coordinator of AkiDwA's Migrant Women Health Programme and Dr. Jose Roberto Guevara, President of the International Council of Adult Education (ICAE), and Board Member of the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) representing Asia-Pacific.
