Thoughts on an Historical Ethnography of Rural Ireland

Thursday, November 23, 2017 - 18:00 to 19:00
An Foras Feasa Seminar Room (First Floor, Iontas Building, North Campus)

Synopsis:
This talk sets out to provide a framework for a historical ethnography of rural Ireland for the period c.1750–1850. This period coincides with the onset of the Industrial Revolution in Britain and an associated Agricultural Revolution. The talk draws on the anthropological literature on peasant societies and looks at aspects of peasant resistance in the Sliabh gCua area of North-West Waterford. It will explore the possibility of attempting a ‘bottom-up’ approach.
