Synopsis:
Although priests were central to church life in medieval Ireland, relatively little is known about them. This paper surveys the recruitment, training, career advancement and pastoral activity of medieval Irish clergy. It also examines the practicalities of life: clerical income, priests' residences, tithes and disciplinary structures. It concludes with a brief case study of a fifteenth-century breviary whose marginal notes shine light on how pastoral ministry was exercised in a medieval rural parish.
