Synopsis
This paper will characterize the international transfers of cultural assets, and in particular art objects, through Portugal between 1933 and 1945, in order to determine if Portugal did serve as a revolving door in this process, as is widely believed. Import and export records of the period reveal the number and types of artworks as well as the identities of those involved in this process. Their resulting analysis calls into question the perceived role played by Portugal in the transatlantic transfer of artworks.
