Travel Insurance Summary

The University provides Emergency Travel Insurance Cover for Staff and Postgraduates traveling abroad on University business and undergraduate students who are traveling on an approved programme abroad under the supervision of an academic department.  The insurance cover is only effective if prior notification has been received by the University.   The insurance covers trips up to 30 days.   Trips over 30 days must be advised to the Insurers by the University.    An additional premium may be required which is paid by the Department undertaking the trip.  The insurance does not cover any other persons accompanying staff, postgraduates or students when traveling abroad.  The insurance is provided for University business only, e.g. travel to destination, cover while on University business and travel back to Ireland.

The MU Travel Insurance policy has a COVID-19 exclusion and will not cover the following (by way of example only): PCR/antigen tests, flight/hotel cancellations, hotel quarantine or an extended stay due to COVID-19.

An extract from the University travel insurance policy reads as follows:
'This Policy does not cover and We [the insurer] will not (under and sections) pay for claims of any kind directly or indirectly arising from, relating to or in any way connected with the Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19)(or any mutation or variation thereof) and/or its outbreak.  This exclusion applies to all sections of cover except for Section 1 - Medical Expenses and Repatriation provide You [MU employee travelling] are not travelling in, to or through any area to which the Department of Foreign Affairs has allocated a security status of 'Avoid non-essential travel' or 'Do not travel'.  To the extent that any term or condition in the Policy may be inconsistent with this exclusion, this exclusion shall prevail.'
