Title:  Is Politics 1,2 or 3 Dimensional?  Mr. Adam Tallon, Department of Theoretical Physics, Maynooth University

Abstract:

It is common to discuss political viewpoints as being positions on a one-dimensional line from left to right, but is this really sufficient to accurately capture the political landscape, as it .e.g. offers no distinction between economic and social issues. In this talk Adam will address the issue by examining the votes that have taken place in the parliaments of three countries during 2017; USA, Ireland and Sweden - by applying Principle Component Analysis to the different parliaments. We will see that the US is mainly one-dimensional, whereas both Ireland and Sweden have political landscapes with much more structure.

He will also discuss some potential applications related to the above mentioned technique.
