Biography

I am currently an Irish Research Council-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Maynooth University looking at nineteenth-century cross-cultural Anglo-German medievalism. Before this, I was a Visiting Scholar at the Centre for British Studies/Großbritannien-Zentrum at the Humboldt University in Berlin, and a College Lecturer in German at Oriel College, Oxford. I completed my DPhil at Merton College, Oxford in 2016.

Research Interests

Mary's current project looks at nineteenth-century English-language reception of the German Middle Ages. It focuses particularly on the NibelungenliedKudrun, and Hartmann von Aue's Der arme Heinrich, and considers how these texts are represented through adaptations, translations, and criticism.

She is also interested in the comparative study of medieval German and English literature, particularly religious writing, and her doctoral thesis looked at late-medieval German and English pilgrimage writing. This project treated pilgrimage accounts as literary texts and investigated identity construction and the conceptualisation of pilgrimage in the late Middle Ages.

Mary is also interested in the study of printed books and manuscripts, and in how these material objects can increase our understanding of the texts contained within. She has worked primarily on English vernacular manuscripts, and German and English early printed books, and is the co-organiser of Teaching the Codex, an interdisciplinary project on the pedagogy of manuscript studies across the Humanities.
