Welcome Message to Students from Dr Eilish Dillon

Thursday, September 24, 2020 - 16:45

Welcome to all students who are joining us at the Department of International Development this year. Never before has it been so important to understand and respond to what's happening in our world. Through engaging with international development, together we will explore the global and development dimensions of a range of contemporary issues - COVID-19, climate change, Brexit, the call for human rights like #Black Lives Matter, homelessness and migrant rights - as well as understanding where they have come from. All around the world, people are struggling to deal with the growing challenges presented by the pandemic but also by the global economic system, with its associated inequalities. They are also doing something about it - learning about the Sustainable Development Goals and what governments and communities can do to bring about a more just and equal world. We hope that through your engagement with international development at Maynooth, you will be enabled with the understanding, knowledge and skills to be among those who make a positive difference in the lives of others at personal, local and global levels.

As a Department, we would like to welcome you and we look forward to engaging with you through on campus lectures and tutorials as well as online. Despite the challenges we face with COVID-19 and the restrictions it imposes on all of us, we trust that you will find your learning experience with us an enjoyable, engaging and rewarding one. Don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions - at our office in Education House or by email at internationaldevelopment@mu.ie

Take care. Stay safe and keep in touch.
