Maynooth in Europe: Lecture series on the Common Law in Lyon

Friday, November 16, 2018 - 09:30

Dr Fergus Ryan of the Department of Law recently delivered a series of lectures on the ‘Law of Persons in Common Law Jurisdictions’ at the Catholic University of Lyon (UCLy) in Lyon, France. The lecture series addressed the law governing persons (natural and legal), personal rights, citizenship, birth registration, names, gender recognition, death, marriage, divorce, cohabitation and parentage in Ireland and other common law jurisdictions. The lectures formed part of UCLy’s University Diploma in Common Law, a two year diplôme universitaire. The beautiful and vibrant city of Lyon is one many Erasmus destinations open to Maynooth university law students. UCLy and Maynooth University have had a strong ongoing partnership for many years. The two Universities share a common LLM in International Business Law, allowing students to study part of their masters in France and part in Maynooth. 2018 saw the commencement of the popular new joint LLB/BCL (Études Juridiques), where students undertake two years of undergraduate study in Lyon before completing their law degree in Maynooth. Amongst other subjects, Fergus teaches Family Law and Gender, Sexuality and Law at Maynooth University. The lecture series was kindly funded by Erasmus+, and initiative of the European Union.”
