The Stephens group at the Department of Chemistry, Maynooth University have just published an elegant synthesis of pyrazolopyrimdinones in the Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry. The pyrazolopyrimidinone is of interest due its role as a basic core scaffold in many pharmaceutically relevant compounds and has found use in the battle against several illnesses including cancer, viral afflictions, obesity, and cystic fibrosis.

Strategies for the synthesis of compounds of value, such as the pyrazolopyrimidinones, is a major focus for many synthetic chemists. This publication by the Stephens describes a facile method for the one-pot microwave assisted synthesis of substituted pyrazolopyrimidinones, with a variety of functional groups tolerated. Principle Investigator Dr John Stephens commented: “The facile synthetic approach we have developed allows us quick and easy access to a library or pyrazolopyrimdinones. This is important as it allows us to more fully investigate their biological activity and potential as pharmaceutical agents. I would like to acknowledge the important and critical contribution of PhD student Mark Kelada, as well as previous group members Dr Robert Devine and Dr John Walsh on this project.”
