Final year Experimental Physics students participated in a field trip to St. Vincent’s and St. Luke’s Hospitals in Dublin, where they gained real-world insights into the clinical application of medical physics. In studying the module EP440 (RADIATION, NUCLEAR & PARTICLE PHYSICS) students learn the theory of quantum particle physics and the application of this theory to medical physics. Dr James McGrath facilitated the visit to the hospitals’ diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy departments where the students saw the use of physics in gamma-ray cameras, CT and PET scans, mammography, and linear accelerators.
This is an annual trip organised by the Physics Department at Maynooth University so our 4th year students can see the amazing applications of physics to the key area of medical physics in a real world setting and learn about the critical importance of physics in our everyday lives.
