The Assembleia da República, Portugal’s parliament, has just published a biography of Adelino Amaro da Costa written by this Department’s Professor Filipe Ribeiro de Meneses. Amaro da Costa (1943-1980) was a co-founder in 1974 of the Christian-Democratic party CDS, and one of the most talented politicians to emerge in the early years of Portugal’s democratic regime. He was serving as Minister of Defence when he died, alongside Prime Minister Francisco Sá Carneiro and their respective partners, in a tragic air crash. The book charts Amaro da Costa’s life and political trajectory, dedicating special attention to his virtuoso parliamentary performances and his defence of a tolerant, democratic, and European Portugal.
