Maynooth University students recently visited Brussels for a fieldtrip to the EU institutions. 17 students and 2 staff members travelled to the EU capital and engaged in a range of activities designed to deepen students’ knowledge of and engagement with the EU institutions. The visit included trips to the European Parliament where students heard from Irish MEPs Sean Kelly, Matt Carthy, Marian Harkin, Brian Hayes and Mairead McGuinness about the work they do on behalf of their constituents in Brussels and how the European Parliament participates in the EU decision-making process. Students also visited the newly opened House of European History museum and spent one day on a guided tour of World War One battlefields in Flanders. Other elements of the programme included a visit to the Northern Ireland Executive Office and the Irish Permanent Representation where students learned about the current Brexit negotiations and what is at stake for Ireland, Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom. Students also visited the European External Action Service and the United Nations during a very comprehensive tour of the EU landscape. The fieldtrip was supported financially by the Erasmus Plus Jean Monnet programme.
