“To what extent are student field trips to an operational prison a catalyst in making connections between theory and practice in a Criminal Justice Processes and Sentencing module?”

Dr Ger Coffey, School of Law, University of Limerick.

Dr Ger Coffey is a Lecturer in Law and member of the Centre for Crime, Justice & Victim Studies in the School of Law, UL. He is also Course Director of the LLM/MA in Human Rights in Criminal Justice masters course and teaches a range of criminal justice modules to postgraduate students. His teaching methodology has incorporated the use of field trips to criminal justice institutions as short-term experiential learning opportunities for students to make connections between theory and the practicalities of criminal justice, which in turn serves to enhance student knowledge and understanding. Ger is a graduate of the University of Limerick (BA in Law & European Studies), the National University of Ireland, Galway (LL.B., Ph.D.) and recently completed an M.A. in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education through the Centre for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) at University College Cork.
