Dr Adrian Scahill’s chapter, ‘Transformations of performance and participation in the early céilí, (1897–8)’, appears in the twelfth book in the Irish Musical Studies series,
Documents of Irish music history in the long nineteenth century, edited by Kerry Houston, Maria McHale, and Michael Murphy. The article re-examines sources from the 1890s and beyond, including newspaper, manuscript and official records, as a means of rethinking how the céilí functioned as a space for performance and participation during the years of the Gaelic Revival.
