Y1Feedback - Enhancing Feedback in First Year Symposium - 27 January 2017

On Friday 27 January, the Y1Feedback project (www.y1feedback.ie) hosted the Enhancing Feedback in First Year Symposium at Maynooth University. 

The Y1Feedback project, led by Lisa O’Regan, Maynooth University Centre for Teaching and Learning, is a collaborative initiative between Maynooth University, Athlone Institute of Technology, Dublin City University, and Dundalk Institute of Technology and is funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
 
Attended by over 130 delegates from across the Irish Higher Education sector, the Symposium was opened by Prof. Philip Nolan, President, and welcomed keynote contributions from international experts in assessment and feedback: Prof. David Carless, Dr Naomi Winstone, Prof. Tansy Jessop, and Emeritus Prof. David Nicol.
 
Prof. David Carless (Hong Kong University) opened the symposium via video link and focused on the importance of trust in the feedback process (http://davidcarless.edu.hku.hk/webcasts/). Dr Naomi Winstone (University of Surrey), shared her research on developing student engagement with feedback and the DEFT Toolkit. Prof. David Nicol’s presentation entitled ‘Promoting Generative Feedback: Feedback that Supports the Development of Learner Self-regulation’ focused on the potential and importance of peer-feedback in developing student self-regulatory learning skills. The closing keynote presentation from Prof. Tansy Jessop (Southhampton Solent University) shared her work on the TESTA programmatic approach to assessment and feedback (https://www.testa.ac.uk/).
 
The symposium also showcased Y1Feedback case studies of technology-enabled feedback approaches for first year from ‘Feedback Champions’ accross the four partner institutes: Maynooth University, Athlone Institute of Technology, Dublin City University, and Dundalk Institute of Technology.
 
Maynooth University presenters included: Prof. Mary Corcoran, Dr Mary Murphy, Dr Pauline Cullen & Philip Finn (Dept. of Sociology), Dr Tatiana Andreeva & Dr Olga Ryazanova (School of Business), Dr Seamus McLoone (Dept. of Engineering), Dr Aidan Mooney, Dr Susan Bergin & Emlyn Hegarty Kelly (Dept. of Computer Science), Dr Julie Rodgers & Brigitte McNeely (Dept. of French) and Dr Brian McKenzie Centre for Teaching and Learning.

The symposium culminated with a lively panel discussion on ‘Feedback in First Year: Moving Forward and Scaling Up’ with contributions from Prof. Aidan Mulkeen, Vice-President Academic and Deputy President, Maynooth University, Dr Niall Seery, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Registry, AIT, Dr Patricia Moriarty, Vice President Academic Affairs and Registrar, DKIT, Elaine Walsh, PhD Teaching Fellow at UL, and Niamh Halpenny, Vice-President for Education, Maynooth Student Union.
