Authentic Assessment

This workshop will consider how authentic assessment activities can be designed and managed to foster student engagement and effective learning. Authentic assessment includes, but goes well beyond, fostering skills to support employability and can involve the development of confidence and self-efficacy.

This session will enable participants to:

  • Discuss what constitutes authentic assessment and how we can use it pragmatically in our programmes;
  • Consider some examples of authentic assessment as implemented across levels and disciplines in higher education globally;
  • Work through a six-stage process to design authentic assessment activities based on realistic scenarios and plausible contexts;
  • Discuss how this approach can be implemented effectively in programmes at Maynooth University.
