Summer School- Terryglass, North Tipperary (18-22 June)

Investigating the Cultural Heritage of Terryglass
Wednesday, July 4, 2018 - 12:00

This recent intensive off-campus Summer School centred on the early medieval and medieval settlement at Terryglass, Co. Tipperary, on the northeastern shore of Lough Derg. The physical remains of the settlement, including the early medieval/medieval monastery and church, the sixteenth century garrison fort and the early thirteenth century Butler castle were examined and surveyed providing students with a practical introduction to survey and evaluation techniques by Dr James Lyttleton. More advanced techniques, such as drone usage and UAV Photogrammetry were also demonstrated by Rob O’Hara in a specialised workshop. A field seminar exploring the monastic remains at Holy Island, on Lough Derg along with Old Court Castle, Terryglass, further complemented this study. Further expertise and support was provided by Dr Eoin Grogan, Dr Mary Leenane, Dr James Schyver, Colm Hardy and the Kilbarron-Terryglass Historical Society.
