Talamh Nua: Sean nós singing in contemporary contexts

Friday, September 27, 2019 - 17:00 to 18:30
Seomra 1.33, Foirgneamh IONTAS, Campas Thuath | Room 1.33, Iontas Building, North Campus

On Friday 27th September 2019, a special bilingual roundtable discussion entitled ‘Talamh Nua: Sean nós singing in contemporary contexts’, will take place in the Iontas Building on North Campus.

This discussion includes contributions from Connemara singer and Maynooth University’s own Sailí Ní Dhroighneáin. She will be joined by fellow Connemara singer Síle Denvir and Iarla Ó Lionáird, member of the internationally acclaimed contemporary Irish/American music group The Gloaming. Ó Lionáird is also internationally renowned for his work with contemporary composers, and most recently performed in Donnacha Dennehy’s The Hunger, a mixed-media opera about the Famine which was staged at The Abbey Theatre in August of this year.

The discussion will explore the interplay between theoretical research on sean nós singing and the reality of contemporary performance practices.  How does contemporary sean nós singing relate to its social, linguistic and historical contexts? How is its continuity with tradition negotiated? What new concepts of creativity and collaboration are currently emerging?

This is a free event open to all, however registration via Eventbrite is encouraged. The event will be followed by a wine reception.
