As part of the Maynooth University Dept. of Adult and Community Education seminar for the NUI Cert. in Psychology Dr.Carol Murphy from the department of Psychology Maynooth University will present a paper titled: Autism Spectrum Disorder: What does it mean and what can be done? This talk will give brief introduction to autism spectrum disorder (ASD)and what it may mean when a child receives a diagnosis of ASD. Autism may impact a child's language and communication development; social development; attentional focus and engagement with the environment. Early behavioural intervention and the potential for remediation of learning difficulties and building up social skills and interactions will also be discussed. This will be followed by a presentation from Dr. Catriona O’Toole Dept. of Education Maynooth University titled: The changing face of childhood and parenthood: Connecting with what really matters in a complex and competitive world. This talk explores how complex modern society has changed the face of both childhood and parenthood, often resulting in increased pressures on children to accomplish and parallel pressures on parents to “get it right”. In this session we explore the changing landscape and consider ways of fostering resilience through the ordinary and timeless magic of everyday relationships. The talks will be followed by a question and answer session. We have a number of places available for the general public.
