PhD in Adult and Community Education

The Structured PhD Programme in Adult and Community Education is designed to facilitate students to make an original contribution to the knowledge base in the field of adult and community education through research, in order to develop and strengthen it. PhD students come from diverse backgrounds in adult, higher, further and community education from Ireland and internationally, for example, community theatre; projects designed for early school-leavers; national adult education organisations; Further Education centres and so on. Research currently being completed by students include teaching and learning in Higher Education; the educational needs of frontline workers in Domestic Violence settings; policy development in adult and community education; experiential learning through equestrian studies; the experience of Arab women in Irish Higher Education; visual and community arts in the education and experience of adult educators and learners. Doctorate in Higher and Adult Education Students and Research Projects

The Doctorate in Higher and Adult Education (DHAE) brings together experienced professionals in teaching and management roles from diverse environments (e.g. Universities, Institutes of Technology and Further Education Colleges) and disciplines (Education, Science, Engineering, Social Care, IT, Business, Humanities). The programme supports educational practitioners and managers to develop their research capacities and to critically reflect on their professional practices within a course that promotes transformation, critical thinking and democracy. Research projects currently being completed by students include critical analysis of the policy and practice-based knowledge and experiences of educators and learners in the adult, further, community, early years and higher education sectors in Ireland and internationally. This includes studies on learning, belonging and inclusion for students from diverse backgrounds in adult and higher education; practitioner experiences in different sectors of early years, further, adult and higher education; management and leadership in higher education; learning technologies and educational practice.
