About

Dr John Mc Ginnity is Admissions Officer/Assistant Registrar at Maynooth University where he oversees the University’s undergraduate intake. John joined Maynooth University in 1996 and since that time the first year intake has increased from approximately 1,000 to more than 3,250 today, making Maynooth University the fastest growing university in the country.

He works closely with a team of colleagues in the Admissions Office and colleagues across the University to promote the range of programmes on offer, and the opportunities which the innovative Maynooth undergraduate curriculum provides.

John has a keen interest in the transformational effects of higher education and works closely with the diverse range of applicants to the University including school leavers, mature students, QQI entrants, as well as DARE/HEAR and sports scholarship applicants, to support individuals in their study aspirations.
John completed a Business degree in Dublin City University in 1984, a Masters in Economic Science in University College Dublin in 1995, and a Ph.D. at Maynooth University in 2012. His doctoral research was on the impact of individual characteristics, school, location, and family background on the college and career choices of Irish school leavers. More recently John completed a Postgraduate Diploma in School Guidance Counselling at Maynooth University.

John has been involved in a number of initiatives such as building a network of relationships with schools and other stakeholders, as well as improving transport connectivity to Maynooth for students. He is a member of a number of internal and external committees. Examples include membership of the Central Applications Office Operations Group, the Board of Dunboyne College of Further Education, and the Kildare/South Dublin Local Link Transport company.

John lectures on Maynooth University’s Postgraduate Diploma in Guidance and Counselling on vocational theory and practice, and is an active researcher in this area.
